The Club has hosted over 50 Golf Union of Wales events over the course of it’s history, including being home to the Welsh Boys Championship and Golf Union of Wales Individual Handicap Championship . In 2016 we host the three day South Wales Boys Championship, and the Golf Union of Wales Ladies Medals and Bowls Finals.
With the game of golf evolving at such a fast pace, Llandrindod Wells GC is constantly looking at, and making, improvements to keep up with modern demands, but at the same time maintaining the feel of the original Harry Vardon lay out. Such changes include the lengthening of our par three 17th hole, with the building of a new competition tee, while a new large teeing area has been constructed for our par three 11th hole. By far the biggest job which has taken place over the winter is the improvement to our par 3 6th hole. The wooden sleepers, which were installed in 2005, have now been removed. We have now created a golf hole more in keeping with the original Vardon design.
At the forefront of all these changes is our Head Greenkeeper Vince Gilroy. Vince joined us early 2015 and has made a big impact in his short time here. A well known figure in the greenkeeping world, Vince was a finalist in the Toro Student of the Year in 1999, and Won the prestigious Pro-Shop Europe Greenkeeper of the year award in 2012.
Environmental issues are also high on our agenda. The winter has seen us busy with Gorse and tree management projects, culminating in a new look to our 8th green area, as well as the thinning out of trees alongside several of our fairways. For those of you familiar with Llandrindod GC you will notice our Heather restoration project which is underway. Habitat piles have been created using the brash left over from the tree removal project. This will be hugely beneficial to insect and bird life.
